      Leg Swelling Q&A

      What causes leg swelling?

Swelling in the foot, leg, and ankle is also known as peripheral edema — an accumulation of fluid in the lower limbs. This fluid buildup can sometimes be painful. Swelling is often more noticeable in the legs and ankles because of the effects of gravity.

Leg swelling may be due to a problem with your circulatory system, lymphatic system, or kidneys. You could also experience leg swelling as a result of fluid buildup after standing or sitting for a long time.

Other conditions that can cause leg swelling include:

      • Acute kidney failure
      • Cardiomyopathy (disease of heart tissue)
      • Chronic kidney disease
      • Cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
      • Heart failure
      • Hormone therapy
      • Lymphedema (blockage in the lymph system)

Vascular disorders are also a frequent cause of leg swelling.

What vascular disorders can lead to leg swelling?

Painful leg swelling, often with discoloration of the skin, could indicate there's a blood clot in the deep veins (deep vein thrombosis).

These symptoms require immediate investigation to prevent a pulmonary embolism — a potentially life-threatening condition where a blood clot travels to your lungs.

Conditions like peripheral artery disease (PAD) and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) can also cause leg swelling in their advanced stages. Both conditions can lead to the development of open wounds (ulcers) on your legs where poor circulation causes tissue deterioration.

What is the best treatment for leg swelling?

If your leg swelling is due to peripheral edema, getting yourself moving can often reduce the fluid buildup as exercising helps to pump any excess fluid back to your heart.

Other remedies that can help with edema include elevating your legs, getting a massage to improve circulation, and wearing compression socks that you can purchase on-site.

Dr. Burkett also specializes in performing advanced, minimally invasive procedures to treat problem veins. Treatments she uses for CVI include:

      ClosureFast™ Procedure

ClosureFast™ uses radiofrequency energy to close off the diseased vein, which your body then absorbs. Blood automatically takes an alternative route, down a healthy vein.

      VenaSeal™ Closure System

VenaSeal™ medical adhesive sticks the vein walls together permanently.

      Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves having an injection into the problem vein to close it off. Dr. Burkett uses a sclerosant liquid or Varithena foam to seal the vein.

PAD might require peripheral balloon angioplasty, where Dr. Burkett passes a slim tube called a catheter into the problem artery. A tiny balloon on the end of the catheter inflates inside the artery, flattening cholesterol buildup (plaque) against the walls and improving blood flow.

Dr. Burkett can also advise you on any lifestyle changes you need to make and check that you're managing underlying conditions such as diabetes that increase your risk of leg swelling.
