      Leg Pain Q&A

What might be causing my leg pain?

Leg pain is often due to muscular fatigue or strains after physical activity and should ease off in a day or two. However, if your leg pain is severe, getting worse, or recurring, it could be a sign of vascular disease.

Other leg problems that can result from issues with the veins and arteries include:

      • Heaviness
      • Swelling
      • Discoloration
      • Itching
      • Tenderness
      • Non-healing wounds
      • Heat
      • Weeping
      • Burning sensation
      • Numbness and tingling

Leg pain, swelling, and discoloration that affect one limb might be due to a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This condition requires urgent treatment, as a blood clot in the deep leg veins can break off and reach the lungs, triggering a potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

How is vascular disease related to my leg pain?

The most common vascular diseases include:

      Chronic venous insufficiency

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a problem where the valves or flaps that keep blood flowing toward your heart stop working properly, allowing blood to collect in the veins. Varicose veins and or leg swelling are the most obvious signs of CVI, however, there are many more.

      Peripheral artery disease

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects the arteries that deliver blood to your legs and feet. These arteries may become narrowed or blocked with plaque, a substance that forms from excess cholesterol in your blood.

The plaque sticks to the artery walls and limits blood flow, depriving your tissues of oxygen and nutrients. Pain when you walk that eases when you sit (claudication) is an early sign of PAD.

To determine what's causing your leg pain, Dr. Burkett performs a physical examination and may run tests such as a vascular ultrasound and ankle-brachial index (ABI) to assess your leg veins and arteries.

What treatments can relieve leg pain?

The treatment Dr. Burkett advises depends on the cause of your leg pain. CVI treatments include:

      VenaSeal™ Closure System

VenaSeal™ is a medical adhesive that sticks the vein walls together. Blood can no longer travel along the diseased vein, which gradually shrivels up and disappears.

      ClosureFast™ Procedure

ClosureFast™ uses heat from radiofrequency energy to close off the vein.

Sclerotherapy involves having a sclerosant liquid or a foam like Varithena injected into the problem vein to close it off.

If you have PAD, you might need to undergo peripheral balloon angioplasty and stenting. This procedure is a nonsurgical way of widening the arteries by squashing the plaque flat using a tiny balloon and keep the plaque away with a stent.

Managing underlying conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes is also important when treating leg pain. You might need to improve weight management, stop smoking, get more exercise to improve your circulatory health, and cut down on animal fats in your diet to reduce cholesterol levels.
